Not quite hell, but close enough. Local Customs: Cavern Sound covers six years lost in the deranging darkness of Independence, Missouri’s Pixley limestone mine, where a team of misfit engineers captured the reverberating echoes of Kansas City’s rock ‘n’ roll blasting cap. Taped in the subterranean studio headspace of Cavern between 1967 and 1973 are previously unissued recordings by Jaded, Larry Sands & the Sound Affair, Sheriff, Mulligan, Stone Wall, Morningstar, the Montaris, and the Dantes, alongside the most explosive tracks released on KC’s Pearce, Rock, and Cave labels by the likes of the Reactions, Burlington Express, the Classmen, Fraight, American Sound Ltd, Baxter’s Chat, 21st Century Sound Movement, Pretty, Tide, and A.J. Rowe.

Setting off from our London office on October 12th, the RA team will cycle 300 miles, across four countries, to Amsterdam for this year's Amsterdam Dance Event. This will be our first fundraising challenge as part of an annual commitment to supporting charities, good causes and music initiatives that we believe in. We will be joined on the four-day adventure by leading artists and industry figures.

Through the combined efforts of RA staff, artists, sponsors and our friends, we’re hoping to create the opportunity for those that share our passion for music, to be a part of a world that we treasure so much.

The first time I met Van Dyke Parks was after a Rotary Room performance he had with Ramblin’ Jack Elliot in 2011. It was at the top of the stairs, back stage of Little Temple on Santa Monica Boulevard in East Hollywood. I helped with the production of his subsequent Rotary Room concert later that year. (My interest in his music was influenced by the deep Love my fellow dublab DJs Hoseh and Nobody had for The Beach Boys. I was a johnny-come-lately to that whole world having raised myself more on Jazz and Hip-Hop. There were about 10 years for me to catch up before being in his immediate presence, and I’d since become very aware of his productions, arrangements, lyrics, and recordings.) We spoke in passing – he was very nice, witty and grand, smiling big, charming, storytelling, and enjoying his time with all the musicians…

The music here was recorded by myself between mid-Aug./mid-Oct. 2008 with a mini-disc player and a Sony multi-directional stereo mic. The areas covered are: Assame (mostly Guwahati) in the country's overlooked NE, Darjeeling, Varanassi and 4 places in Rajasthan (Udaipur, Jodphur, Pushkar and most importantly, Jaisalmer, in the region's western desert). 

I'm not an ethno-musicologist, but have been fanatical about folk music from all over the world since I first heard a recording of Burundian drummers when I was about 17 ( I then got to see such a troup perform while living in Morocco in the late 90's). I've tried to snag a few examples of local music in many places I've traveled, but India was almost overwhelming, and performers were absolutely comfortable with an obvious tourist/foreigner waving a microphone, even when I was running down the street chasing after a parade band, as I did on tracks 21 (Pushkar) & parts of the collage I made on track 24 (Varanassi). It was always some god or other's birthday, or there was some other reason to celebrate, which meant music flowed through the streets. In Jaisalmer, there was a duo who sang and beat drums every morning at sunrise as they strolled the town. In Pushkar, horn and drum bands wandered through the less tourist-soaked sections and played songs for new-born babies (5, 28, 36). Temple bells and sanskrit chanting permeated Varanassi's ghats at dawn and again well after dark. Track 1 is a collage I made of sounds that happen every single morning at the Assi Ghat.Track 24 has some more examples of this as well.

This week's All Songs Considered kicks off with a pair of anniversaries. This year marks the 30th anniversary of classic mockumentary This Is Spinal Tap, which inspires Robin Hilton to reminisce about rock concerts gone comically wrong, and then to invite listeners to submit their own "Spinal Tap moments." Next, Bob Boilen shares a live recording of an inventive new song from Robert Plant, who performed over the weekend at Brooklyn Academy of Music in celebration of the 50th anniversary of Nonesuch Records.

Bob continues with a track recommended by The National's Bryce Dessner, who collaborated with French artist Mina Tindle on an upcoming album titled Parades. The gorgeous track, "Taranta," was inspired by the tarantella, a kind of traditional Southern Italian dance.

Robin changes gears with "Nose Grows Some," the edgy closing track from Thom Yorke's surprise album Tomorrow's Modern Boxes. NPR Music's Otis Hart continues in the same vein with music from Aphex Twin's excellent new album Syro, the artist's first full-length solo effort in 13 years, as well as a track from London-based dance-pop duo The 2 Bears.

Next, Robin selects an unnerving song from Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross' incredibly creepy soundtrack to the movie Gone Girl. Bob closes the show on a slightly more upbeat note, with a gentle, dreamy track from Jon Hopkins' upcoming EP, Asleep Versions, featuring vocals from Raphaelle Standell.

The Who - Be Lucky, la primera grabación de la banda en 8 años

To celebrate their 50th anniversary, the Who will release a career-spanning greatest-hits collection, titled The Who Hits 50!, that will feature the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame band's first new song in eight years. Described as "a classic Who rocker," "Be Lucky" is the Who's first original since their 2006 comeback album Endless Wire. The Who Hits 50! arrives October 27th, just a few weeks before the band's anniversary tour of the same name kicks off in Europe.

Roger Daltrey and Pete Townshend are joined by drummer Zak Starkey, bassist Pino Pallodino and keyboardist Mick Talbot on the new track. "Be Lucky" was produced by Dave Eringa, who previously worked with Daltrey's Going Back Home, the singer's collaborative LP with Wilko Johnson. The Who also revealed that the band's royalties from "Be Lucky" will benefit Daltrey and Townshend's Teen Cancer America charity, which the group recently showcased on the Stand Up to Cancer telethon.

Descubrí la música de Daniel Hecht en 1986 cuando me entró la fiebre de música new age, especialmente de la discográfica Windham Hill. Había una copia de su disco Willow en la tienda Discomanía en Plaza Las Américas. Nunca lo compré pero oí una selección de Willow en una compilación Windham Hill Sampler, que compré ese mismo año.

Diez años después me encontré una copia elepé de Willow en WGDR, la emisora radial comunitaria de Vermont donde yo iba casi todos los días a trabajar como voluntario. Lo puse en mi programa y un amigo radioescucha llamó para informarme que Hecht vivía en el mismo pueblo que yo, ¡Plainfield!, lo cual significa que tengo que haberle pasado por el lado unas cuantas veces en esos años. ¡Qué pequeño es el mundo!

Resulta que Hecht ya no toca música, y que es mucho más conocido como novelista. Miren como empieza su entrada de Wikipedia:
