English singer-songwriter David Gray joins World Cafe for a full-band performance of songs from his new album, Mutineers. Gray's first record, White Ladder, remains an all-time best-seller in Ireland, and went on to become the first album released on Dave Matthews' ATO Records in the U.S. White Ladder has sold more than seven million copies worldwide.

Here, World Cafe's Michaela Majoun has a long discussion with Gray about his difficulty in making the new album, his 10th, and what he's learned while inhabiting music's mainstream.

Sarah McLachlan.

Canadian singer-songwriter Sarah McLachlan has just returned with her first album in four years, titled Shine On. With hit albums like 1994's Fumbling Towards Ecstasy — as well as her historic efforts at the head of 1997's Lilith Fair tour — McLachlan is one of the most prominent figures in the singer-songwriter movement of the '90s.

McLachlan has experienced major life changes recently, including a divorce, the death of her father, and a new love. In this conversation on World Cafe, she describes how these transitions have influenced her work.

April 2 2014

Alynda, this up and coming icon of Americana music, is actually Puerto Rican on her father’s side!

Even before our Sense of Place visit to New Orleans, we had been hearing about the band Hurray for the Riff Raff, led by Alynda Lee Segara. The band rose from the streets of the French Quarter, where Alynda really learned how to be a musician. She is originally from the Bronx and left home to ride the rails all over the country before landing in New Orleans. Now, Hurray for the Riff Raff has just released their debut album for ATO Records called Small Town Heroes, and Alynda has developed into a great songwriter.
So, who are the riff raff? According to Alynda, "The more we play and the more we tour, the riff raff is turning into anybody who feels a little bit like an outsider or an underdog."
