Aurora: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

 • The first time I saw Aurora sing, it appeared so new to her that each note, and each hand gesture accompanying each note, seemed like a discovery and an adventure for the singer. She was 18 when I first saw her in New York City, and now the Norwegian singer is 19; take a look at this Tiny Desk Concert, and her sense of innocence and discovery still rings as true as ever.
Aurora has just one EP and some singles out so far, and ever since seeing her at CMJ in 2014, I've been eager for her debut album. Early next year, we should finally have it — as well as more chances to see Aurora live, as she plans on touring the U.S. in the spring.

The Walla Recovery - She Said

http://thewallarecovery.com

The Walla Recovery invites you to step off of the platform of nostalgic "what-ifs" and embark on a journey away from unfulfilled longing and toward sacred forgetfulness. Not as those who have finished the journey, the boys of Walla have been chasing the mystery since 2001.

The band's latest EP, With Trembling... respects the audience with its brutal honesty while challenging them to adopt its expectant hope. Consisting of pilgrims Brandon Reynolds (percussion), Jonathan Kaylor (cello/guitar), Justin Luningham (bass/cello), and singer-songwriter Zack Smith (guitar/vocals), The Walla Recovery offers euphonic versatility and familiarity with each live and studio listen.

These trepidatious troubadours have travelled from Austin to Alabama, Florida back to Fort Worth, near Zack's childhood home on Walla Ave. The release of With Trembling... marks the most significant stride the band has taken in its trek together. The next one promises to be bigger.

If By Yes - You Feel Right (Cornelius remix)

Way back in the 20th century, Petra Haden and Yuka Honda first crossed paths when they were members of That Dog and Cibo Matto (respectively). Since then they've each had one foot in pop music and one foot in the avant garde. Petra has released groundbreaking vocal projects Imaginaryland and Petra Haden Sings The Who Sell Out, performed and recorded with Beck, Foo Fighters and The Decemberists, while also singing and composing TV commercials for Toyota Prius. Yuka has released 3 experimental electronic albums on John Zorn's Tzadik label, while also producing Japanese pop artists, including Maki Nomiya of Pizzacato Five and Miu Sakamoto.

The two started writing songs together in 2002, but it was a slow, long distance project. They live 3000 miles apart (NYC / LA) and would collaborate intermittently, using frequent flier miles...

As IF BY YES, they are joined by guitarist Hirotaka "Shimmy" Shimizu and drummer Yuko Araki, both long time members of the Japanese band Cornelius, and on their debut album, Salt On Sea Glass, special guests include David Byrne (vocals & lyrics) on "Eliza", guitarist Nels Cline, and remixes by Keigo "Cornelius" Oyamada.

Sail away on scintillating solar winds. If By Yes is guaranteed to seduce you with their utterly exquisite and playful sensibilities, futuristic rhythms, and other-worldly sounds.

Rena Jones - the passing storm

"One of the best experimental artists currently making tracks. Layers and layers of experimental-electronic goodness, focus constantly shifts from leads to bridges to the beat and back around again, using sounds in Ableton Live that many others would have difficulty with, but instead forms an analog/virtual opus." -Women's Radio

Jones' tracks have been released with such reputable international labels as Iboga, Spun Records, Aleph Zero, 1320 Records, Addictech, Ultimae, Schematic Records, Native State Records and she's celebrating the launch of her labels Cartesian Binary Recordings and Pok Pok records.

Two of Jones' albums have been chosen in the top 25 essential albums of the year on NPR Echoes Radio in 2006 and in 2009.

Rena is currently celebrating her fifth full length album featuring world renowned artists Sophie Barker on vocals (Zero 7 and Groove Armada), Matt Robertson (Bjork, Lamb, Batt for lashes) and Earl Harvin (Seal, Air)

Multiple tours around North America and Europe have lead Rena to perform at some of the worlds most established cutting edge electronic music festivals; Glade Festival (UK), The Secret Garden Festival (UK), Shambhala Music Festival (Canada), Symbiosis, Lightning in a Bottle as well as tour support for Plaid and opener for Ladytron and Trentemoller.

Jones' live sets are a potent sonic session. She orchestrates her violin and cello over hand crafted beats melding the organic with the electronic. Her performance is a sophisticated example of the modern movement in electronic dance and ambient music.

"Multi-instrumentalist and sound engineer Rena Jones is a force to be reckoned with. At age 30, she boasts more than 30 collaborative albums, 3 full length solo albums, 20 years of classical violin study, and 12 years of cello, and she is considered one of the leading women in audio engineering today." -Strings Magazine 2007

Her extensive background in music and sound covers a colorful spectrum from award winning video games Dance Dance Revolution and sound design for Twisted Tools and Keith McMillen Instruments and she has over a decade of experience as a seasoned studio musician.

Anna Nalick - Breathe (2am)

Roger Sanchez - Another Chance (Afterlife Mix)

For any DJ and wanna-be producer, “hustle” can be an oft-overstated attribute and, yet, for the right person, it’s an underappreciated compliment from those in the know. Hustle is the absolute definition of both the man and the meteoric career of international DJ Roger Sanchez. From a humble beginning in NYC to multi-year residencies in Ibiza; from digging in dusty crates to headlining festival main-stages around the world, Roger is truly a self-made man and and dance music star.
The crafting of Roger Sanchez, the DJ, started in the late 80s in Corona, Queens, where as a young man he was enticed by the early roots of hip-hop sprouting all over New York. Attending parties by the Bronx River and other jams as a break-dancer and graffiti artist, Sanchez was introduced to DJ’ing through friends, trying his hand in an organic environment where his creativity behind the decks flourished from a few singles into an ambitious catalogue of over two thousand original productions and remixes.
These tracks have not always been under his own name, though. Roger has released music under a slew of monikers, including S-Man, Roger S., The Nu-Solution, Underground Solution, DV8, Ego Trip, El Mariachi, The Funkjunkeez, Tribal Infusion, Twilight, and Transatlantic Soul amongst others. Each new name has allowed him to push his music in unique yet blended directions, allowing him to carve parallel and weaving paths through the tastes of the times while enjoying opportunities to break out of the known.

Sasha

http://www.residentadvisor.net/podcast-episode.aspx?id=491SASHA: A mix legend shows his skillsWhen it comes to recording mixes, Sasha has some of the best credentials in dance music. In 2013 he released Invol<3r, a two-CD missive made up entirely of his own remixes, and the latest chapter in a story that dates back to 1994. That was the year Sasha and John Digweed, his long-time sparring partner, recorded The Renaissance Mix Collection, one of the first-ever fully mixed compilations. This wasn’t merely a format advancement, though: the mix is considered one of the greatest there is—although it had a rival in Northern Exposure, the double mix the pair delivered in 1996. During the ‘90s, through his mix CDs and club sets (both of which took on a mythical status) Sasha helped create the blueprint for progressive house, a style that favoured emotive synthesis, driving basslines and long, seamless mixing. He had an almost samurai-like approach to DJing, with an emphasis on technique and a studied attention to detail. The core of Sasha’s MO is still in place. His productions and remixes are released at a considered pace, and his label, Last Night On Earth, is meticulously curated. We no longer refer to what Sasha plays and produces as progressive house, but he’s still fascinated with melody and the art of narration through music, something that’s clear on his RA podcast. It would be inaccurate to describe this as a home-listening session (there are plenty of robust beats here, after all) but he’s chosen tracks that feel song-like, with strong melodic lines and vocals drifting in and out of focus… the mix also features the sort of innovative little tricks that have kept Sasha at the top of his game for more than 20 years.

No second troy - Gardens after lockout

Since forming in 2005, No Second Troy has carved a determined and inspiring path from obscurity to national recognition. Feature spots in movie trailers such as "Charlie St. Cloud" with Zac Efron, highlights on ESPN, XM Radio and appearances on MTV have all garnered mass appeal, while critical acclaim from SPIN Magazine and the CMJ Top 200 music chart boosted its indie support. It's perhaps because of this wide spread acknowledgement that the group has had the privilege of playing alongside bands like Coldplay, Everclear, Pete Yorn, the Robert Randolph Family Band, Dr. Dog and countless others at the prestigious SXSW and NXNE festivals. No Second Troy enlists an undeniable self-awareness of their musical space between indie and pop. Employing a realistic perspective on the band, the music and the industry, Washington DC's No Second Troy teeters on the edge of indie rock with introspective anthems rich in explosive vocal melodies, driven by railing guitars, and balanced by subtle layers of piano and organ. The band makes no excuses in trying to blend the pop hooks of bands like Arcade Fire and Young the Giant with the unique indie-rock...

Zero 7 - In The Waiting Line

Zero 7 is a British musical duo consisting of Henry Binns and Sam Hardaker. They began as studio engineers and in 1997 formed the group Zero 7. Their debut album, Simple Things, was released in 2001. Subsequent albums include When It FallsThe Garden and Yeah Ghost.

After studying sound engineering, Binns and Hardaker began their careers in the music industry in the 1990s at Mickie Most's RAK recording studio in London, engineering music for British groups like the Pet Shop BoysYoung Disciples and Robert Plant. In 1997 they created a remix of the song "Climbing Up the Walls" by Radiohead (which was also the first time the name 'Zero 7' was used)[1] and Binns received a credit for additional sampling on Kid A.[2] The pair also remixed Terry Callier's "Love Theme From Spartacus" and songs by Lenny KravitzSneaker Pimps and Lambchop.
The name Zero 7 was chosen after Binns and Hardaker travelled through Mexico and ended up in Honduras where they spent time on an island called Utila on which was a bar called 'Cero Siete'. When back in the UK they were asked by Radiohead to remix "Climbing Up the Walls" and they called the mix "the Zero 7 Mix" which stuck.[3]

Joni Mitchell - Taming The Tiger

Joni Mitchell
Joni's remarkable life has been documented in thousands of articles, interviews, press releases, music, and art over the course of her career. The JoniMitchell.com library contains 3008 titles and counting, including articles written and interviews conducted exclusively for the website that cannot be found anywhere else. The Chronology of Appearances is another comprehensive database that provides the dates and venues of Joni's performances chronicling every known appearance from Joni's coffee house days to some of the biggest venues in the world.
It is probably safe to say that the Library and Chronology of Appearances contain the most exhaustive collection of publically available information in existence about Joni Mitchell. Sifting through all of this material to distill an accurate biography of the artist is an impossible task and no-one but Joni herself knows all of the incidents, feelings, thoughts, motivations - the many facets of the personality that make up both the inner and the outer life of this complex human being. But by utilizing the site's invaluable resources, supplementing it with material from books and other people who have played important parts in her life, and, of course, by listening to the wealth of incredible music she has created, we at JoniMitchell.com feel that it is possible to search out the most reliable and comprehensive information available to piece together a portrait of the great artist.

The Autocollants - Tennis Racket

Upon the 1996 release of their first EP, Casa, the New York quartet known as the Autocollants brought on their styling of gentle indie pop. With the lineup consisting of Dwayne (guitar), Tim (guitar), Laura (lead vocals/bass), and Ed (drums), their appeal of StereolabLush, and a trademark of breezy, relaxed appear continued the following year as Drive-In Records packaged the bands second EP Tennis Racket. However, by 1997 The Autocollants called it quits amidst personal and creative differences. Laura relocated to Northern California in 1999 and moved on to form Casino Ashtray, Cartwheel -- with former Autocollant Dwayne- as well as releasing a solo EP. Shelflife Records eventually gathered and released The Autocollants discography on the 1999 compilation Why Couldn't Things Just Stay The Same.

Jennifer Warnes - The Whole of The Moon

Jennifer Warnes is one of the most renowned singers of our time. Her voice is one of the loveliest instruments in contemporary music. As a solo artist or a duet partner, on albums or in movies, Warnes sings it straight from the heart. Her voice is pure. The emotions it conveys are pure, too.
"To this day, I'm not as interested in music as people think," says Warnes. "I'm more interested in how close we can get through the music."

Warnes has recorded songs that have won both Grammys and Oscars, songs that have topped the pop charts and honored the most subtle aspects of art.

Her smash duet with Joe Cocker, Up Where We Belong, is a defining example of her vocal majesty. Warnes is an artist with extraordinary emotional range. Her collaborations with Leonard Cohen - on his records, as well as on her classic album Famous Blue Raincoat - have a haunting, delicate beauty to them. For all the power and command in her voice, Warnes' singing reveals great emotional vulnerability.

Abra Moore - Happiness

AbraBenchWEBAbra Moore has learned a few things about music, life and the intrinsic value of happiness and balance. The quiet confidence she’s found seeps through every element of On The Way, the new record she’s made with long-time collaborator and producer Mitch Watkins. The new collection is subtle, seductive and assured. In her own words, it’s a “gentle sway” of an album. It recaptures the organic, intuitive style that led to a GRAMMY™ nomination and worldwide acclaim for her breakthrough album, Strangest Places.
“It’s not ego-based; it’s not about making a stand,” says Moore. “It’s about flowing through and capturing exactly where I was in life when I wrote these songs.” It’s been an interesting journey that brought Moore to where she is today—one that includes the tropical wilds of Hawaii, a modeling career (put away and unexpectedly revived), flirting with major label stardom and ultimately settling into a productive and satisfying life in Austin, Texas.

Jane Siberry - The Taxi Ride

Siberry's music is most commonly compared to artists such as Kate BushJoni Mitchell and Laurie Anderson. She has drawn from a wide variety of styles, ranging from new wave rock on her earlier albums to a reflective pop style influenced by jazzfolkgospel, classical and liturgical music in her later work. She has cited Van Morrison and Miles Davis as being strong creative influences.
Siberry has often criticized the competitive power of commercial radio and the recording industry.[6] In 2005, Siberry pioneered a self-determined pricing policy through her website[7] on which the purchaser is given the choices of: standard price (about $0.99 USD/track); pay now, self-priced; pay later, self-priced; or "a gift from Jane". In an interview with The Globe and Mail, Siberry confirmed that since she had instituted the self-determined pricing policy, the average income she receives per song from Sheeba customers is in fact slightly more than standard price.[8][9]

Shawn Colvin - Steady On - The Dead Of The Night

Born in Vermilion, South Dakota and raised in part in Illinois and Ontario, Shawn Colvin was already a well-traveled and seasoned performer by the time she won her first Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk Album with her debut Steady On in 1989. In the decades since, Colvin has released a string of superlative albums and established an enduring reputation as one of America’s great live performers. Her lasting appeal is due in part to her willingness to lay herself bare coupled with a dry wit; intrigued parties would do well to investigate Colvin's superb memoir Diamond In The Rough (William Morrow Publishing, 2013).

Paolo Angeli: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

October 19, 2015
by ANASTASIA TSIOULCAS
Paolo Angeli has a whole toy shop aboard his guitar: He's got hammers, pedals, propellers, springs, drone strings and even a couple of cell-phone ringers at his disposal.
The base of it all is a six-stringed instrument from his native island of Sardinia, and the seed of Angeli's sonic creations is traditional Sardinian music. But in the same way that he's turned his guitar into something new, Angeli twists and turns that tradition into musical magic, in creations that skim over jazz, experimental, improvisational, classical and punk — embracing all, yet not quite belonging to any. All those toys let him create a palette of super-saturated colors and unbelievably varied textures.
Angeli, who's based in Barcelona, describes his set-up as "a one-man band for the new millennium." The setup may be futuristic, but the music he creates is deeply human — warm and full of humor and wit, just like Angeli himself.S'u is available now.

Beth Orton - Central Reservation

Singer/songwriter Beth Orton combined the passionate beauty of the acoustic folk tradition with the electronic beats of trip-hop to create a fresh, distinct fusion of roots and rhythm. Born in Norwich, England in December 1970, Ortondebuted as one half of the duo Spill, a one-off project with William Orbit which released a cover of John Martyn's "Don't Wanna Know About Evil." She continued working with Orbiton his 1993 LP Strange Cargo 3, co-writing and singing the track "Water From a Vine Leaf" before appearing with the group Red Snapper on their first singles "Snapper" and "In Deep." In 1995 Orton teamed with the Chemical Brothers for "Alive: Alone," the ultimate track on their Exit Planet Dust LP. After assembling a backing band comprised of double bassist Ali Friend, guitarist Ted Barnes, keyboardist Lee Spencer, and drummer Wildcat Will, she finally issued her 1996 debut EP She Cries Your Name; her stunning full-length bow Trailer Park, produced in part by Andrew Weatherall, followed later in the year. In 1997, Orton released the superb Best Bit EP, a move towards a more organic, soulful sound highlighted by a pair of duets with folk-jazz legend Terry Callier; the full-length Central Reservation followed in 1999. "Stolen Car" was a moderate hit among college radio and tours across the U.S. were also successful. Three years later, Orton emerged refreshed with her third album Daybreaker. This time around, she collaborated with ex-Whiskeytown frontman Ryan Adams and the Chemical Brothers. In early 2006, Orton released her fourth album, Comfort of Strangers. The 14-song set was recorded in two weeks with producer Jim O'Rourke. After a recording break of six long years, Orton signed to Anti and released the Tucker Martine-produced Sugaring Season in the early fall of 2012.
