RA.408 Mo Kolours

Few artists manage to make waves as quickly as Mo Kolours has. The half-English, half-Mauritian singer and producer, real name Joseph Deenmamode, released his first EP in 2011, but by then he'd already been discovered by Gilles Peterson, who booked him for a live session on the BBC. His self-titled debut album, which didn't come out until today, has been hailed by The Guardian as one of the year's best and has completely sold outvia pre-order on vinyl and CD.

It's not hard to see what everyone is on about. Deenmamode's music is both soothing and entirely singular, a part-live, part-sampled brew that borrows elements of soul, hip-hop, house and dub without really sounding like any of those genres individually. It's rare that you hear something so completely assured, and yet so seemingly disconnected from any established scene or style. On RA.408, Deenmamode adds some bump to his signature sound, drawing records almost entirely from the close-knit crew of artists around him.

April Ludgate - Parks and Recreation

Paul Dondero / Out to Play

February 2 2014 / 2 de febrero 2014

This Piano Sampler album was my introduction to the amazing music of Windham Hill Records. I bought it in December 1985 at the record store in the basement of Guaynabo's San Patricio shopping mall. This piece by Paul Dondero is my fave from that record.

Lee Bannon DJ set

Podcast 335: Lee Bannon

Only two months have passed since we profiled Lee Bannon as part of this year's Bubblin' Up Week. Normally, we'd allow a little more time to pass before tabbing a Bubblin' Upartist for the XLR8R podcast series—if nothing else, for the sake of continued artist development—but in Bannon's case, it quickly became clear that the Brooklyn producer wasn't going to be waiting for anything. His debut LP for Ninja Tune, Alternate/Endings, dropped in January, turning heads with its blown-out aesthetic and frequent nods to drum & bass, yet Bannon has announced that he's already working on a follow-up. Given his prodigious work rate, we figured that Bannon might also be willing to take on our podcast series, and he not only delivered an exclusive DJ mix, but one that's stuffed with several of his unreleased tracks. In truth, the podcast flies by in a flash, a sensation that's only heightened by Bannon's continued passion for breakneck jungle. Small bits of grime and garage do pop up from time to time, but on the whole, the mix is a Bannon-centric exercise, one full of distorted tones, booming bass, and rapid-fire rhythms. If this is a preview of what Bannon has in store for us in the months ahead, it seems like he'll be piloting a very wild ride.

Aimee Mann-Build That Wall

My all time favorite Aimee Mann song. It simply makes my day.

Paul McCandless - "Sojourner"

I discovered the music of oboeist and saxophone player Paul McCandless listening to his band Oregon back in the 1980s when I was a college student. Sojourner is the first song in his excellent solo album Heresay, released on the Windham Hill label.

RA.405 Galcher Lustwerk

Galcher Lustwerk's vocal style is reminiscent of the literary "iceberg theory"— leaving certain things unsaid is more powerful than stating them. Combining just a few well-chosen words with stripped-back house beats has been a potent signature sound for the White Material artist. This approach was showcased last year on his debut single, Tape 22, and then on his 100% Galcher mixfor Blowing Up The Workshop, which RA writers voted theirfavourite online mix of 2013. "It started from trying to make rap records," he told us last year. "I became more and more interested in using words to communicate ideas—but only inferred ideas, not explicitly explained ones."

This month the US producer will release his second solo EP, a vinyl-only effort for UK label Tsuba Limited. Galcher's RA podcast offers a glimpse into his wider inspirations, and it's little surprise that vocals play a central role. Recorded in mixtape-style, spoken-word interludes and raps are interspersed with experimental cuts and a few of his unreleased tunes.

Great Rita Moreno interview on NPR

Rita Moreno is perhaps the most acclaimed Latina actress alive today. She’s had love affairs with Marlon Brando and Elvis Presley. She’s starred in American classics like West Side Story, Oz and numerous theater productions, films, and TV shows. But in her interview with Maria Hinojosa, she reveals the nagging self-doubt she’s struggled to overcome and the overwhelming feeling of receiving lifetime achievement awards.

7545_10152169134678394_768174505_nMs. Moreno was born Rosa Dolores Alverio in Humacao in a small town near the Puerto Rican rain forest. At age 5, she moved with her mother to New York and began dance lessons making her Broadway debut at just 13. She signed her first movie contract with MGM shortly after. Moreno has won the Emmy, Grammy, Oscar and Tony Awards. In June 2004, Ms. Moreno was awarded The Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George W. Bush. Her book, Rita Moreno: A Memoir, is a New York Times Bestseller.

A great and hilarious dialogue, Alec Baldwin interviews Rosie O'Donnell

Here's The Thing(Mary Ellen Matthews)

Episode #44

Rosie O'Donnell

« previous episode | next episode »

Monday, June 24, 2013

00:00 / 00:00
This week, Alec sits down with Rosie O’Donnell who says she “never wanted to be a talk show host …  I wanted to be on Broadway…I wanted to be a Bette Midler backup singer, one of the Harlettes.”
And for over three decades, Rosie has done a lot of things – she’s been a standup comic, a Star Search contestant, an actress, a talk show host, a philanthropist, an activist, a magazine editor, a blogger, a Broadway and television producer, and above all, a mom to five. The latest child, Rosie tells Alec, "rebirthed" her.
On changes in the acceptance of gay actors during the arc of her long career now, she says, "To think that in my lifetime, in my career, that you can be an out performer/actor playing against type – Neil Patrick Harris playing a womanizer on that show, being out and married with twin boys – and it doesn't hurt your career. It doesn't do anything. So in a way it's the most beautifully astounding, inspirational thing that I can think about in my 51 years of living."
