Eska Mtungwazi is something of a phenomenon in the U.K. music scene. Hailing from Lewisham in South East London, this multitalented musician, songwriter, arranger, and—most importantly—vocalist, has become a go-to person for many of the most discerning artists and producers around. For the best part of two decades Eska has, often somewhat anonymously, lent her tones to a myriad of musical offerings, including work from The Cinematic Orchestra, Matthew Herbert, Zero 7, and Grace Jones. She’s seen very much as “the singer’s singer,” and one whose fans have been desperately waiting for far too long to hear her full-length album. The wait is over. Uppalapu Shrinivas (Telugu: ఉప్పలపు శ్రీనివాస్ 28 February 1969 – 19 September 2014) was a virtuoso Indian mandolin maestro, prodigy, trailblazer and composer belonging to the classicalCarnatic musical tradition of Southern India. Recognized worldwide as a colossus and the rarest of musical geniuses, Shrinivas is regarded as the Mozart of classical Indian music.^[2] Shrinivas pioneered the introduction of the mandolin, a western instrument, into classical Carnatic music, because he fell in love with it as a five-year old, in the same manner as three much older musicians, Varahappa Iyer, Baluswami Dikshitar, and Vadivelu, had introduced the violin into Carnatic music, two hundred years ago. There is a major difference in their contributions: cognoscenti and leading musicians accepted Shrinivas’s mandolin when he was about nine, owing to his astounding virtuosity and sheer genius, whereas it took about a hundred years for the violin to be thus accepted.^[3][4] A prodigy, he made his debut in 1978, at the age of nine, and since he was the first musician to adapt and play the mandolin in the Carnatic music style, he came to be popularly known as Mandolin Shrinivas.^[5] “Eddie van Halen, eat your heart out,”Beatle George Harrison reportedly said in 2001, having stumbled upon one of Shrinivas's albums. "George Harrison's favourite piece of Indian music was Mandolin Ecstasy, an album recorded by a child prodigy from Madras called U Shrinivas at the age of 13. It was, like, my dad's favourite album of all time," says (Dhani) Harrison. "U Shrinivas is 27 now and still making music. He plays an electric five-string mandolin, he's fantastic...." ^[6] Over the next four decades, he toured across the world, and collaborated with John McLaughlin, Michael Nyman, and Michael Brook.^[7] After Pandit Ravi Shankar, no classical Indian musician enjoyed the kind of global reach and worldwide audience that U. Shrinivas has: at a very young age he was internationally viewed as the successor to Pandit Ravi Shankar.^[8] Shrinivas's gift was so prodigious and baffling from the very moment he gave his first performance that it inevitably led to his being compared to the world's greatest prodigies: "Some of you have heard or read about exceptionally gifted children, our own Mandolin Shrinivas, Sir Yehudi Menuhin, Beethoven, Sir Isaac Newton, Picasso, Madam Curie, the list is endless."^[9] (The Hindu, Sunday, May 3, 1992)

Fila Brazillia is the electronica collaboration of Steve Cobby and David McSherry from Kingston upon Hull, Yorkshire in North-East England. They play electronica, ambient, techno, rock, funk and dub, though the music is often described by others as ‘Downtempo’.

Formed in 1990 their early releases on Pork Recordings (also based in Hull), Old Codes New Chaos, Maim That Tune, Mess, Black Market Gardening, Luck Be a Weirdo Tonight and Power Clown soon followed. Later, after creating their own music label with Sim Lister (Twentythree Records) in 1999, they released further albums A Touch Of Cloth, Jump Leads, The Life And Times Of Phoebus Brumal,Dicks and Retrospective.

Born in Rio de Janeiro, Bola Sete's name means "Seven Ball". In Brazilian billiards, the seven ball is the only black ball on the table, and Bola got this nickname when he was the only black member of a small jazz group.^[1] He studied guitar at the Conservatory of Rio and he started performing with his own sextet and local samba groups while he was still a student. His early influences were guitarists Django Reinhardt,Charlie Christian, Barney Kessel, and Oscar Moore (of the Nat King Cole Trio), while he was also captured by the sound of the big bands that were touring South America at that time (Dizzy Gillespie, Tommy Dorsey, Woody Herman). His career started in 1952, where he played various clubs and hotels around Italy for four years. Then, he returned to Brazil and started touring all of South America, during which time the manager of the Sheraton hotels noticed him and decided to bring him to the US to play in the hotels. He played for a while in New York's Park Sheraton, later moving to San Francisco to play in the Sheraton Palace. Dizzy Gillespie was staying there at the time and listening to Bola Sete playing every day. When Gillespie decided to bring his pianist Lalo Schifrin to the hotel, he discovered that Lalo and Bola had already met and played together in Argentina. This meeting was the beginning of Bola's success in the US. In the fall of 1962, Gillespie took the guitarist to the Ninth Annual Monterey Jazz Festival, where he enjoyed a huge success.^[1] After that, he toured for a while with Gillespie and finally returned to San Francisco, where he joined the Vince Guaralditrio. Bola was already well known in the US, and his partnership with Guaraldi yielded several well-received recordings. After staying for a couple of years with Guaraldi, Bola formed his own trio with his fellow Brazilians Sebastian Neto (bass) and Paulinho (drums). With his own trio, he appeared at the Monterey Jazz Festival in 1966 and released an album of his performance, which peaked at #20 on the US Jazz chart.^[2]

Sylvan Esso: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

It's hard to believe that it hasn't quite been a year since the first Sylvan Esso album came out. The odd yet perfect marriage of Nick Sanborn's electronics with Amelia Meath's voice feels like a familiar friend by now. And yet seeing these songs performed softly — and captured in the light of day — made them feel fresh and lovable in new ways.

To keep things fresh and interesting, Sanborn brought a bunch of new gear to the Tiny Desk; it seemed a bit bewildering to him for a bit, but also inspiring. I think that's what makes this combination work so well: Meath and Sanborn inspire one another. You can see it in their eyes and in their smiles, and it comes out in their playing and dancing. It's enchanting music, performed wonderfully.

Dub Club visionary Tom Chasteen invited the legendary Mad Professor into the dublab studio to share insight into his creative process and tales of his illustrious history blazing echo trails. Arguably the most famous producer in dub’s second wave, Mad Professor is a consummate experimentalist known to melt songs into genius deconstructions unrecognizable from their original forms. He is also a fiercely independent creator who has been releasing albums on his own Ariwa label for over three decades. When he’s not brewing wild formulas in his UK studio bearing the same Ariwa name, Mad Professor tours the world performing live multi-track dub mixes heavy enough to shake the roofs off any village. Thanks to Tom Chasteen for bringing Mad Professor into the dublab studio. We hope you enjoy their highly inspiring session of sound and conversation.
