Tama Sumo

http://www.residentadvisor.net/podcast-episode.aspx?id=461

In describing Kerstin Egert, it's tempting to drop a cliché and say she's one of the nicest people you'll ever meet, but that would be slightly wide of the mark. It's more that she's ebullient—between her bubbling laugh and shy yet open demeanour, her presence radiates generosity and warmth. Something similar could be said of her DJ sets. From her early days playing gay parties in Berlin to her more recent stint as a Panorama Bar resident, Egert has won over countless dance floors with her bright, funky, feel-good style.

But there's more to Tama Sumo than just good vibes. Egert's personal story is one very close to the heart of house music: that of a gay woman who grew up in a conservative environment, eventually venturing out in search of a more tolerant and understanding community. Though unknown to most of her audiences, this experience fuels Egert's sounds, adding depth to her selections. Authenticity in music is a slippery phenomenon, but when Tama Sumo plays house she does it in a way that serves the genre's original purpose: to work as a message of love and an emotional salve. On RA.461, we get a taste of the sound that's made Tama Sumo a cult favourite.

Ultravox

Ultravox (formerly known as Ultravox!) are a British new wave band, formed in London in 1974 asTiger Lily. Between 1980–86, they scored seven Top Ten albums and seventeen Top 40 singles in the UK, the most successful of which was their 1981 hit "Vienna".
The band has been led by two different frontmen who never played together in the band at the same time. From 1974 until 1979, singer John Foxx was frontman and the main driving force behind Ultravox. Foxx left the band to embark on a solo career and, following his departure, with the three remaining members in hiatus, Midge Ure took over as lead singer, guitarist and frontman in 1980 after he and keyboardist Billy Currie worked in the studio project Visage. Ure revitalised the band and steered it to commercial success lasting until the mid-1980s. Ure left the band in 1987 after establishing his own solo career and the group disbanded for a while. A new line-up, led by Currie, was formed in 1992, but achieved little success.
The band's best-known line-up of Currie, Ure, bassist Chris Cross and drummer Warren Cann reformed in 2008 and performed a series of reunion shows in 2009 and 2010 before releasing a new studio album, Brill!ant, in May 2012. In November  2013, Ultravox performed as special guests on a four date UK arena tour with Simple Minds.

January 24 2014 / 24 de enero 2014

I discovered Laraaji in the late 1980's through my friend Victor and through an awesome music store called Precision Audio. Laraaji's collaboration with Brian Eno's Ambient series just blew me away, I just love his cosmic ambient sound.  It is extremely original and defies classification.  Check out this live performance. I mean, Laraaji+Dublab, a superb combination!

Laraaji is a true life enhancer. His solo sound offerings and those alongside collaborators such as Brian Eno have been a great inspiration to us at dublab. Laraaji’s decades long celestial sonic flow experiments have recently been seeing new light with several reissued albums from All Saints Records, a collaboration with Blues Control for the RVNG Intl. Frkwys series, and an appearance onLight in the Attic and Ethereal Sequence’s epic New Age survey I Am the Center. We’re thrilled that so many ears have been freshly discovering his music.
With the intention of turning on more ears to Laraaji’s music we collaborated with our friends Cinespia, to proudly present anintimate concert and Laughter Meditation Playshop with this New Age pioneer at Cinefamily. See some photos here. During his visit we were blessed to have Laraaji and his partner Arji graced the dublab studio for a live “Sprout Session.” Their offering was a pure expression of joyous sound waves that we are honored to share with you now.

We welcomed the influential guitarist Peter Walker back into the dublab studio for the third time and what a joy his visit was! He shared rich stories with us and some live guitar pieces. The session coincided with the Light in the Attic rerelease of his 1968 Vanguard album “Second Poem To Karmela” Or Gypsies Are Important and Delmore Recordings’ album release of the lost studio session Has Anybody Seen Our Freedoms?. Enjoy Peter’s offering of music and anecdotes.

Jan Garbarek & Ustad Fateh Ali Khan - Saga

Jan Garbarek (born 4 March 1947)[1] is a Norwegian tenor and soprano saxophonist, active in the jazzclassical, and world music genres.
Garbarek's sound is one of the hallmarks of the ECM Records label, which has released virtually all of his recordings. His style incorporates a sharp-edged tone, long, keening, sustained notes, and generous use of silence. He began his recording career in the late 1960s, notably featuring on recordings by the American jazz composer George Russell (such as Electronic Sonata for Souls Loved by Nature). If he had initially appeared as a devotee of Albert Ayler and Peter Brötzmann, by 1973 he had turned his back on the harsh dissonances of avant-garde jazz, retaining only his tone from his previous approach. Garbarek gained wider recognition through his work with pianist Keith Jarrett's European Quartet which released the albums Belonging(1974), My Song (1977) and the live recordings Personal Mountains (1979), and Nude Ants (1979).[3] He was also a featured soloist on Jarrett's orchestral works Luminessence (1974) and Arbour Zena (1975).[4]

Fateh Ali Khan (Urduفتح علی خان) was a classical singer and Qawwali musician. He was born in JalandharPunjabBritish India in 1901. Ustad Fateh Ali Khan was the father of Pakistani Qawwali musician, Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan. Their family has an unbroken tradition ofQawwali for over 600 years. Ustad Fateh Ali Khan was trained in classical music and Qawwali by his father, Maula Baksh Khan, and he soon distinguished himself as a skilled vocalist and instrumentalist. He learnt to play traditional Indian instruments such as sitarsarod andvichitraveena as well as Western instruments like the violin. He also mastered thousands of verses in PunjabiUrduArabic and Persian.

Steffen Basho-Junghans

July 16 2014 / 16 de julio 2014

What first called my attention about this guitarist was the Basho in his name. Naturally, I assumed he must be closely related to the amazing immortal Robbie Basho, but that is not the case, as the bio below explains.
